1ºESO A Use of Can

Verb can
es un verbo modal.

• No ponemos "to", se dice el verbo Can, nunca se dice TO can, 
• No añade "S" para He, she, it  (he can, she can, it can)
• Es irregular en la forma del pasado (could)

 Significado
Se usa para expresar habilidad y permiso.
Habilidad:  ¿sabes tocar la guitarra?
                  Can you play the guitar?
Permiso: ¿puedo cerrar la ventana?
               Can I close the window?

Affirmative

• I can play the trumpet.
  Yo puedo/sé tocar la trompeta.  

• You can sit here if you like.
  Puedes sentarte aquí si quieres. 

 

Negative: hay tres formas y las tres son correctas.

• I can not swim.
  No puedo/sé nadar.
• That cannot be true.
  Eso no puede ser cierto.
• You can't tell me what to do.
  No puedes decirme qué hacer  

Interrogative

• Can Peter speak German?
  ¿Puede/sabe Peter hablar alemán?
• Can you help me with my homework?
  ¿Me puedes ayudar con mi tarea?

Practise the use of a or an

 Recordad:

• La primera vez que mencionamos algo ponemos a/an

I saw a man. (Vi un hombre)
La segunda vez que hablamos del hombre, ya podemos poner the.
The man had seven dogs. (El hombre tenía siete perros)

Casos especiales:

• No ponemos ni a/an ni the (artículos)  con países, regiones o provincias, lagos y montañas excepto cuando el país es un conjunto de estados: Estados Unidos de América, The United States, The European Union.

Arturo lives in Madrid near Mount Rainier.
Ana comes from Canada, near  lake Ontario.
They live in northern British Columbia.

• Usamos the con oceános y mares.

My country borders on the Pacific Ocean.

• No usamos a/an ni the cuando hablamos de cosas en general.
  I like racing cars. (Ojo, en Castellano decimos: Me gustan los coches de carreras).
  She likes reading books.

• Tampoco usamos a/an ni the al hablar de comidas, lugares y formas de transporte:
  I like lasagna. (Ojo, en Castellano decimos: Me gusta la lasaña. Este la lasaña desaparece en inglés). He has breakfast at home.
  I go to university.
  He comes to work by taxi.
